In two novels, The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957), and in subsequent writings and lectures, she put forward the philosophy of Objectivism. Her support of egoism in ethics and laissez-faire capitalism, against altruism and the welfare state, were popular in conservative circles.
